Kicking bags vs. punching bags

What is the difference between a kicking bag and a punching bag? If you’re thinking of getting a new one and can’t seem to understand the terminology that’s currently used to depict these products, we’ll do our best at explaining it a bit.

Typical kicking bags are larger and bulkier compared to punching bags. Most people erroneously think of punching bags as speed bags. Obviously, they aren’t the same. Speed bags are small, convenient, and efficient to an extent, but they do little to nothing in the way of putting pressure on your leg muscles, for instance. In fact, it is virtually impossible to kick a speed bag with your legs.

On the other hand, kicking bags, also known as heavy bags, have to either be installed on the ceiling or can be self-standing. Freestanding models are far more convenient as you don’t need to make a lot of effort to install them. In fact, all you have to do is fill them up with water or a special mix recommended by the manufacturing brand.

So, in a nutshell, speed bags are more compact and can be used to work on your arms while heavy bags can be utilized for your whole body.

The problem with some freestanding alternatives is that they aren’t tall enough for you to get the feel that you are practicing or sparring with a real opponent. Of course, there are several variations in terms of their design, which is to say that you do have the freedom to go for a BOB punching bag and at least have the impression that you’re boxing with someone.

Punching bags that have to be installed on your ceiling are far better when it comes to practicing your MMA and boxing moves. They can come prefilled or not, and they are traditionally made from quality natural or artificial leather that enables them to withstand the test of time. In fact, some models, such as those manufactured by Outslayer, are even backed by warranties that last for ten years.

One other mention that we have to make in relation to heavy bags is that investing just fifty bucks in a new one will inevitably make you feel like you’re heating a toy instead of a real punching bag. Most of the models that are worth the effort are priced at a minimum of $100. The materials that were used to manufacture the product matter quite a bit as they can affect your entire experience. Obviously, you do need to use gloves in order to protect your knuckles, but some materials are better than others. Real leather bags are expensive, but they’re also very durable and comfortable to work with. Synthetic leather punching bags are the next best thing if your budget doesn’t allow you to spend all that much money on a natural leather alternative.

Finally, you can also get a canvas punching bag or one that’s made of plastic. Because the latter is thick and somewhat rubbery, these bags have to be filled with water. As a material, canvas makes a better choice compared to plastic, but these bags still feel kind of cheap when you hit them, and that’s why they’re generally less recommended compared to their natural and synthetic leather counterparts.
