FUNDAMENTALS OF AN UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY UNIT

In a business setup, power outages can cause downtime. These downtimes can be so frustrating and can make a company lose millions of dollars. These losses might have been prevented if the company had invested in an Uninterruptible Power Supply Unit, popularly known as a UPS.

Just as the name suggests, an uninterruptible power supply unit is an electronic device that offers an alternative supply of power in cases of power outages, fluctuations, and power hardware failures, allowing continuity of business operations.

Businesses big and small should look to invest in UPS systems. This is a reliable system that is crucial to any business. There are a couple of options to choose from. It can be a permanent solution or opt for UPS rental which offers temporary solutions.

Once a UPS system is installed, that does not guarantee that is the end of power outages and fluctuations. Maintenance and regular testing of the UPS have to be scheduled in order to ensure it is still running at its peak, crucial data is protected and is still functioning as required. This is called preventive maintenance.

OPT FOR NEWER VERSIONS

Previous models of UPS systems gave technicians a hard time diagnosing potential malfunctions. This was a major drawback since the technicians’ only became aware of system malfunctions when there was already a power failure. Newer versions have improved features that give indications of imminent dangers. For example, these new UPS systems will indicate when the batteries are running low. They also have advanced monitoring systems that indicate utility power, the status of the batteries and their back-up time among others.

In addition, the system upgrades in newer versions allow for them to be monitored remotely. In case a problem arises, the system will page the technicians on the specifics of the problem.

In the event of low battery power, the UPS system will safely shut down all devices on that network.

BASIC UPS MAINTENANCE

UPS systems require proper maintenance and frequent testing. This aids in diagnosing potential risks and minimizing the likelihood of unprecedented power interruptions.

There are a couple of things required of the technicians in regards to proper maintenance of these systems.

  • Maintenance records – Technicians should have a book that contains manufacturer’s manuals, systems diagrams, procedures of operations and maintenance schedules.
  • Proper protective clothing – Technicians are required to wear protective clothing when handling n UPS system.
  • Thermal-imaging unit – This is a piece of equipment that technicians use to check for corroded wires, loose connections and other dangerous wiring mishaps.
  • Digital multimeters – Digital multimeters are used by technicians to measure voltage and current in the UPS.
  • Hand tools that are properly insulated and other maintenance tools

For proper preventive maintenance, ensure you do some visual inspection on the UPS every three months. Check for loose connections, insulating problems and other tear and wear signs.

Every six months, check for any contaminations in the battery, vacuum its equipment capacitors and its performance in regards to HVAC’s temperature and humidity.

Last but not least, perform a complete scan to check the functionality of the system.
