Pay attention to your staff demographics. In order to promote diversity at your place of business, you need to know exactly how diverse your organization is to begin with. A simple chat with your HR executive is the ideal first step towards addressing diversity.
Put together a diversity committee. No matter how many books that you might read on diversity or how many seminars that you might attend, no one can speak to your company’s specific needs quite like your own staff can. That’s why it’s important to put together a diversity committee, people who are willing to meet together to brainstorm on ways to make the company better, so that you can take informed measures when addressing your business’ diversity needs.
Create a company diversity handbook. Diversity is something that everyone can stand to learn more about so if you don’t already have a company diversity handbook, this would be a great time to create one. It should include statistics, tips on how to deal with other co-workers in a sensitive matter and also your organization’s policies when it comes to how you require employees to interact with one another while at work.
Be intentional about recruitment. It’s going to be close to impossible to have a diverse workplace if you are not hiring people of different cultures. So, if it’s time to hire someone for a new position, make sure that you are intentional about including people who represent the kind of demographic that you would like your company to represent. First and foremost, you definitely want to hire someone who is the most qualified for the position; however, as you’re going through resumes, it’s important that you don’t only interview a certain type of individual. Be open to all kinds of candidates.
Train thoroughly.
